The CW’s epic Legends of Tomorrow hasn’t even gone before cameras yet, though the initial teaser presentation certainly gave us a taste of the out-there action. Now, a new piece of concept art puts Firestorm at the center of a huge battle, while new showrunner Phil Klemmer talks the spinoff’s complicated relationship with time travel.
Entertainment Weekly debuted a new piece of concept art for the series, one which bears a notable resemblance to the factory battle glimpsed in the initial trailer, Flash and all, though strangely absent is Caity Lotz’s White Canary. We don’t yet know if Robbie Amell will join Victor Garber to form their combined identity of Firestorm however, though the pair are said to at least appear together in The Flash’s Season 2 premiere.
As to how strongly Legends of Tomorrow will focus on time travel, Klemmer previewed that the group may not prove so chronologically united when it comes to stopping Vandal Savage:
They’re screwups. Instead of tiptoeing through history, they’re plodding through it, leaving their footprints and fingerprints and constantly having to wonder whether they’re going to screw the future up rather than fix it… It’s going to be total madness. […]Who can resist the urge to correct the past or to investigate the future? The idea of traveling through time has a caper quality to it, and that’s what we’re looking forward to. Yes, there will be the big ‘try to stop Vandal Savage’ [plot], but people will inevitably become diverted on their little side missions and when people are trying to fix their own timeline, that’s when you really start screwing things up.
Premiering likely in January of 2016, so reads the Legends of Tomorrow description:
When heroes alone are not enough… the world needs legends. Having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat – one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. Can this ragtag team defeat an immortal threat unlike anything they have ever known?
Set for 15 episodes thus far we know the series to include among its cast Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber), Jay Jackson (Franz Drameh), Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell), Caity Lotz, and time-traveler Rip Hunter (Doctor Who alum Arthur Darvill).
