When Frank Grillo’s character was introduced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he seemed like a decent dude; working for S.H.I.E.L.D. alongside Chris Evans’ Cap to save a bunch of kidnapped hostages. But for longtime Marvel readers, Grillo’s character’s name, Brock Rumlow, was a big red flag. In the comics, Rumlow is the real name of Crossbones, a deranged super-villain and frequent associate of the Red Skull. Sure enough, by the end of Winter Soldier, Grillo’s Rumlow revealed his true allegiance to Hydra (an organization created by none other than Red Skull) and squared off with Anthony Mackie’s Falcon in hand-to-hand combat.
At the end of that fight, Rumlow was (SPOILER ALERT) buried beneath the remains of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Washington D.C. base. But like any good comic-book character who looks dead, Crossbones was not dead. In the very last scenes of Winter Soldier, he was rescued from the rubble, and he will return in Captain America: Civil War.
Everyone assumed that with Grillo back for Civil War, he’d be doing so as a full-fledged Crossbones. And, according to a bunch of photos from the set of Civil War that popped up on the Internet today, everyone was correct.
