Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 is knee-deep into production and like every film that dares shoot on public streets, it has been the victim of set photos. Lots and lots of set photos. The latest batch of images reveal some characters who should be familiar to fans, albeit in newly revised forms. Are you ready for your first clear look at the villainous trio of Shredder, Bebop and Rocksteady? Of course you are.
The first thing you’ll notice from these images is that Bebop and Rocksteady (played by Gary Anthony Williams and WWE wrestler Sheamus) are not genetically modified creatures. At least not yet. Although everyone remembers this duo as a humanoid Warthog and a Rhinoceros, they were human in their earliest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles appearances. So don’t start burning down the internet quite yet – their transformation into more familiar monsters will surely occur during the film at some point.
More importantly, we also have our first look at the Turtles’ arch-nemesis Shredder, who has been recast since his absolute bummer of a debut in the first film. No longer a masked cypher, he is now played by Brian Tee and his costume has been simplified and no longer belongs to the Transformers school of being complicated for the sake of being complicated. We don’t know if Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 will be a good movie, but at least it knows that a major villain played by an actual actor is far more effective than a major villain an over-the-top costume.
The set photos also give us our first look at Brittany Ishibashi in costume as Karai, Shredder’s daughter. It seems that she shares the same super-villain tailor as her father.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 will also (somehow) feature Tyler Perry as a fourth major villain, Baxter Stockman. We’ll figure out how all of these characters fit in the same story when the film opens on June 3, 2016.
