Now that we’re all more or less on the same page with regard to Game of Thrones spoilers, many have wondered if Season 6 might return to the Iron Islands and Greyjoy plotlines dropped by HBO. We’ve seen some strong hints, but now it seems Borgen star Pilou Asbæk has landed a long-awaited key role in Season 6, of which filming confirms a major literary event.
Game of Thrones fans wishing to stay dry of literary spoilers, this line here is your port of harbor. Those who believe what is dead may never die, Game of Thrones Season 6 has allegedly found its Euron Greyjoy in the Borgen star, who (according to Watchers on the Wall) was observed filming a key scene in Ballintoy Harbour, Ireland.
We won’t spoil everything about the Iron Islands this year (the folks at Vanity Fair have a fine summation waiting, if you like), though Euron’s arrival undoubtedly returns us to the dropped “Kingsmoot” thread of Theon’s family jockeying for power. An earlier casting call had also tipped fans off to Euron’s arrival, describing an important new figure as:
An infamous pirate who has terrorized seas all around the world. Cunning, ruthless, with a touch of madness.’ He’s a dangerous-looking man. A very good part this season.
Also worth noting, Pilou Asbæk’s Borgen co-star Birgitte Hjort Sørensen appeared prominently in Season 5 as the Wildling chieftan Karsi, who … well, it wasn’t entirely pleasant either.
Elsewhere of Game of Thrones Season 6, screen legend Max von Sydow has been cast as the mysterious Three-Eyed Raven to a returning Bran, while Deadwood alum Ian McShane will also appear in a limited, mysterious role. Apart from a list of directors, debate continually rages as to whether Kit Harington’s Jon Snow will participate in Season 6, even as Harington can clearly be seen in Belfast, and story logistics seemingly confirmscenes set at The Wall next year.
We may yet have an additional two seasons beyond the sixth year to pad out George R.R. Martin’s story, but what else can we infer of future Game of Thrones from the potential casting of Euron Greyjoy?
