Sinister was one of the most successful horror films of 2012, which made the notion of a sequel inevitable. While director Scott Derrickson is busy preparing for Marvel’s Doctor Strange, he’s also producing Sinister 2, with Citadel director Ciaran Foy at the helm. The first images from the upcoming sequel have arrived, and they’ve brought back our old pal Bughuul. Oh, that wacky Bughuul, always terrorizing families wherever he goes.
Sinister 2 will focus on a new family — a mother (Shannyn Sossamon) and her twin boys, who move into a rural home only to discover that they’ve been selected to die at the hands of Bughuul, aka Mr. Boogie. James Ransone’s Officer So and So appears to be the only character from the first film returning to reprise his role in the sequel. He was definitely one of the highlights of Sinister, bringing some levity to the dark and dreary horror story.
In addition to the silhouette of that creepy Bughuul, the first images (via Bloody Disgusting) feature lots of eerie little ghost kids who will presumably help the entity in his mission to terrorize this new family and drive them to their deaths. There’s also the old 8mm projector, which means we’ll likely get more of those scary films — another highlight from the first movie.
Irish director Ciaran Foy is helming the film from a script by C. Robert Cargill, who also provided the screenplay for the first Sinister. Foy made his feature directorial debut with Citadel in 2012, another eerie ghost-tinged story. His directing style should make a good fit for Sinister 2, which hits theaters on August 21.
