‘Star Trek 3’ Will Have a “Kick Ass Role” for Idris Elba, According to Simon Pegg

It was announced a little while ago that Idris Elba is joining the cast of Star Trek 3, in which he’ll play the film’s big villain. Many fans quickly began speculating about which classic Star Trek villain Elba might be playing, with a Klingon being the most popular theory. Simon Pegg, who is now scripting the film, has confirmed that Elba is definitely not playing a Klingon — in fact, he’s not playing anyone who you’re familiar with at all.
Pegg spoke with MTV about Star Trek 3, in which he’ll not only reprise his role as Scotty, but he’s also working on the screenplay alongside Doug Jung. The actor and writer revealed that Elba is actually playing an original “kick ass” character written specifically for the film:
It will be [an original character], yes. This is the five-year mission now, we’re out there. We don’t always have to keep bumping into the same people… So we’re gonna try and reflect that in the movie.
Pegg previously opened up about his mission to capture the tone of the original series in the new sequel from director Justin Lin, promising a film that will be filled with adventure and a sense of wonder. That’s great news, considering how dark and dour things got with Star Trek Into Darkness. The actor said that while they can’t recapture the small, low-budget feel of the original series, they still want to make a film that honors the “essence” of the series:
We can invest in it the spirit of the show and get back to the essence of what it is, and so what we’re hoping to do is make a Star Trek for today that doesn’t forget where it came from.
As one last parting gift in the interview, Pegg was asked about the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and if he thinks the new film will be better than George Lucas’ prequels, to which he replied, “I think the trailer is better than all of the prequels combined.”
Star Trek 3 hits theaters on July 8, 2016
