Yes, the Power Rangers reboot is still happening, and to prove it Lionsgate has begun eyeing a fresh group of new, young actors to fill those spandex power-suits. Director Dean Israelite and the studio have begun testing a handful of actors for the roles of the teenage heroes who will battle monsters in the latest incarnation of the classic series.
According to Variety, Lionsgate is eyeing a batch of up-and-coming actors for the lead roles, including The Martian’s Naomi Scott and Jem and the Holograms star Stefanie Scott for the role of Kimberley, aka the Pink Ranger. Daniel Zovatto (It Follows), Ross Butler (Chasing Life) and Brian Marc are up for the role of Zack, aka the Black Ranger, with KJ Apa (Shortland Street), Austin Butler (The Shannara Chronicles) and Mitchell Hope (The Descendants) are up for the part of Jason, aka the Red Ranger.
The report also notes that the studio wants a more well-known and established actor for the role of the film’s antagonist. Thor and X-Men: First Class writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller penned the script for the new Power Rangers movie, which centers on a group of high school teens gifted with alien powers, who join forces to help protect the world from extraterrestrial enemies.
Power Rangers hits theaters on January 13, 2017.
