For a little while there, The Green Inferno looked like it was dead, buried and gone for good. Now, Eli Roth’s cannibal horror movie has finally emerged from whatever distribution hell was keeping it down. It has a release and everything! Sure, it’ll open in theaters after his fifth film, Knock Knock, has come and gone, but that’s better than nothing, right?
Roth, best known for directing Cabin Fever, the Hostel films, and playing “the Bear Jew” in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Bastards, took to Facebook reveal the new and official release date for The Green Inferno: September 25, 2015.
His distributor is Blumhouse Productions, the company best known for backing Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge, and, uh, Whiplash. In other words, a bloody jungle-trek-into-hell is just another day at the office for these guys, who have transformed the release of low-budget horror movies into something of an art form. In retrospect, of course Blumhouse was going to rescue this movie.
Now, we will be able to see for ourselves if the film is worth saving. The Green Inferno made the film festival rounds a few years back, where the reaction was mixed.
And yet the mundane drama that has kept The Green Inferno from release has already created a reputation for the movie. What is this movie? Where has it been? What is it? Expect to see a lot of advertising centering on phrases like “The movie they didn’t want you to see!” After all, that’s what we’d do if we were tasked with selling this thing.
