Sony Hack Documentary in the Works From the Filmmakers Behind ‘The Square’

If it’s major news, it’s bound to become a movie of some sort, and last year’s massive Sony hacking scandal is definitely major news. Or was, anyway. The hack reportedly motivated by Sony’s release of the Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy The Interview will now be the subject of a new documentary from the filmmakers behind the Oscar-nominated documentary The Square.
THR reports that Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer are teaming up for a documentary about the scandal that arose late last year when Sony’s systems were hacked and loads upon loads of emails and corporate insider information were dumped on the internet. The series of attacks on the company shed a bright light on some of Sony’s plans, as well as some unfortunate email exchanges between executives, ultimately resulting in executive Amy Pascal’s resignation.
Although it’s been long-assumed that North Korea was responsible for the cyberattack due to their displeasure with the release of The Interview, which depicted North Korea in an unfavorable — though widely-accepted —light, the new untitled documentary will reportedly explore alternative theories about the attack and those responsible.
President Obama and the FBI officially pegged North Korea as the culprit for the attack, but many have speculated that it might have been the result of a disgruntled ex-employee.
Amer and Noujaim were nominated for an Oscar and won an Emmy for their documentary The Square, which centered on the revolution in Egypt in 2011.
