Last week, when news broke that Channing Tatum might be leaving Gambit, there was a little extra piece of news that you may not have noticed while you were panicking: Tatum was in the midst of testing opposite potential leading ladies, including Spectre star Lea Seydoux. 20th Century Fox has a couple of other interesting names on their lead actress short list, including Rebecca Ferguson, who just kicked all of the ass in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.
Deadline reports that Fox and director Rupert Wyatt have Seydoux, Ferguson and Mad Max: Fury Road star Abbey Lee on their short list to star opposite Tatum in the solo Gambit film. The actors are vying for the role of Bella Donna Boudreaux, Gambit’s childhood friend and the daughter of the leader of the New Orleans Assassins’ Guild. Gambit, aka Remy LeBeau, belongs to the Thieves’ Guild, and the warring groups see their blossoming romance as a chance to build an alliance. Previous casting information has hinted at the incorporation of the Guilds in the film.
In addition to her upcoming role as an atypical Bond girl in Spectre, Seydoux is also known for her roles in Blue Is the Warmest Color and The Grand Budapest Hotel. You’ll recall Lee as one of Immortan Joe’s “wives” (slaves) in Mad Max: Fury Road, while Ferguson impressed the hell out of audiences in Rogue Nation. She also previously starred on the Starz series The White Queen, in which she gave a rather remarkable performance.
Gambit hits theaters on October 7, 2016.
