A couple of weeks ago, Hugh Jackman revealed a teaser image for The Wolverine 2 on Twitter and asked fans what they’d like to see in the new sequel. It’s Jackman’s last outing as the beloved X-Men character, and it makes sense that the actor would want to deliver the best possible story for Logan yet. We know the plot is (somewhat) based on Mark Millar’s Old Man Logan comic, but as Jackman reveals, there were a couple of things in particular that his fans really want to see.
In an interview on the Sydney Confidential podcast (via THR), Jackman said there were two very popular suggestions from fans for The Wolverine sequel. First, the actor said there were “lots of calls for Victor Creed to come back” — Creed is the human alias for Sabretooth, Wolverine’s longtime enemy. The character appeared in the first X-Men film, played by Tyler Mane, and in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Liev Schreiber.
With Deadpool getting his own solo movie to rectify how horribly his character was adapted in Origins, perhaps it’s not out of the question for Sabretooth to make an appearance in The Wolverine 2. The Old Man Logan arc centers on an older, more grizzled Wolverine (as if he could get any more grizzled, but he does), who lives in an alternate version of the future, where super-villains have split America up into various territories.
As for the other popular suggestion, Jackman says, “the words ‘berserker rage’ came up a lot. If you know Wolverine, you’ll understand.” This would actually play pretty well into the Old Man Logan narrative, specifically with regards to the reason why Logan has given up the Wolverine mantle and retired. In the book, Wolverine is tricked during an attack on Professor Xavier’s school, and instead of helping his team, he kills all of them in a fit of berseker rage.
Wolverine’s berseker attack is particularly dangerous — it’s an entirely irrational attack without prejudice, meaning that both friends and foes are at risk.
James Mangold is returning to direct The Wolverine 2, with Patrick Stewart recently (re)confirming that he’ll also appear in the film, which is set to hit theaters in 2017.
