Steve Carell Replaces Bruce Willis in Woody Allen’s Next Film, Which Sounds About Right

A few days ago we learned that Bruce Willis had abruptly exited Woody Allen’s upcoming untitled project, less than 24 hours after photos showed Willis filming a scene on set. Willis’ departure caused a bizarre amount of speculation, with rumors circulating about his commitments to Misery on Broadway, though the most likely reason for Willis leaving was that he just wasn’t right for the part. It seems as though Allen has already found his replacement, and all is right in the Woody Allen universe.

Deadline reports that Steve Carell will replace Willis on the untitled film which also stars Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg, Parker Posey, Blake Lively, Corey Stoll, Anna Camp and Paul Schneider. Carell previously starred in Allen’s 2004 film Melinda and Melinda, so the two have a working familiarity that Willis may have been lacking. Allen’s material has a particular rhythm and a specific language, and it’s likely that Willis wasn’t a good fit.
As usual, we don’t know much about Allen’s new film this early in production — it does appear to be another period piece, judging by set photos that have been floating around online. Allen’s most recent film — Irrational Man, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone — is still playing in theaters.
