Spider-Man Might Wear Two Different Costumes in ‘Captain America: Civil War’

Before he stars in his own solo film for Sony, Tom Holland will make his big Spider-Man debut for Marvel in next spring’s Captain America: Civil War. Though neither film will tell Spider-Man’s origin, Holland’s Spidey will be young and inexperienced; the better to contrast with the more adult heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. A young and inexperienced Peter Parker also potentially means a poorly dressed one; what kind of 15-year-old kid knows how to make an incredibly intricate superhero costume with multiple colors and webs and such?

The specifics of young Spidey’s costume(s) are the subject of a new rumor at Heroic Hollywood. They report that Holland will actually wear two different costumes in Civil War, essentially representing his evolution from a DIY novice to full-fledged, Avengers-recognized superhero:
In the beginning of the film we are getting the homemade version of the suit that has been heavily rumored, that’s for sure ... [the] one Peter Parker gets towards the end of the film from Tony Stark that features the traditional blue and red color scheme.
If true, this would be an interesting repurposing of comics canon on the big screen. In the Marvel Comics’ version of Civil War, Peter Parker joins Tony Stark’s side of the superhero registration battle, and as part of their alliance is gifted a brand-new costume (known as the “Iron Spider”) with an Iron Man-ish red-and-yellow color scheme and big stabby, grabby metal spider-legs. Tweaking that story to have Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark give Holland’s Peter a variation of his classic red-and-blue costume would explain how a high-school kid gets such a swanky outfit, which is a very clever revision (and a reminder that with great power comes great sartorial responsibility).
Captain America: Civil War opens in theaters on May 6, but it’s hard to imagine we won’t see at least one (or perhaps both) of these costumes well before then.
